    Bio: When Karla Bass came to Normandale in the fall of 2008, she was already established in her career as a case assistant at the prominent Minneapolis law firm Foley and Mansfield. Despite feeling comfortable in her current job, Bass wanted to get her bachelor’s degree.

    She turned to Normandale as a school that would provide her with a quality education while giving her the flexibility to continue her career. Bass’ experience at Normandale delivered everything she wanted and more.

    “I think Normandale has a great Accelerated Business program and I always tell my friends about it. All the teachers I had were great.     Bio: Chelsie Larson is a native of Richfield and started at Normandale as a Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) student in 2005. As a PSEO student, she took classes at Normandale while still in high school. She followed that by completing the prerequisites for a teaching degree at Normandale, and then earning a B.S. in elementary education from Minnesota State University, Mankato. All of her classes were taken at Normandale as part of the Normandale–Minnesota State, Mankato partnership in teacher education. Her eventual plan is to earn a master’s in social work or organizational leadership. In the meantime, she’s working as a college lab assistant in the Math Center at Normandale, serving as the interim children’s program director at her church, and tutoring high school and college students in math.

    Program: Hospitality Management

    Bio: There is an old adage that says “success is when preparation meets opportunity.” Jon Swenson’s path through Normandale to become the owner of a Famous Dave’s restaurant in Minneapolis is a great illustration of this concept.

    After graduating high school, Swenson spent four years in the Air Force as a mechanic. While contemplating his next career move, he discovered the Hospitality Management program at Normandale. Swenson successfully completed the program and in 1993 got an opportunity that would jumpstart his career in the industry. Through instructor Barney Klecker, Swenson got to spend a year abroad learning the business at a world-class hotel.

    “The internship opened up a lot of different opportunities in my life,” said Swenson. “I met my wife there and learned a lot that would help me throughout my career.  I think it was one of the most important experiences of my life.”

    Bio: Randie Carlson is in the process of finishing her Law Enforcement program at Normandale. She has already been accepted into Metro State where she plans on getting her Bachelor’s Degree in both Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement.

    She believes the instructors and courses she has taken at Normandale have been an excellent preparation for Metro State and eventually a career as a police officer. Carlson likes that the teachers have a lot of field experience in what they are teaching and that they do their best to pass that along to the students.

    “I think one of the things I really like about the Law Enforcement track at Normandale is that the teachers are either former or current cops. They give you great insight, and a real in-depth look at the field instead of just repeating it from a book. We also had a lot of great guest speakers who came in and talked to you about some of the things you need to know. It is also good because we get to talk to them and make connections professionally. These classes have helped me fall in love with Law Enforcement as a career.”

    Bio: Edson Cruz arrived in the United States from Honduras in 2005 with a good base of knowledge in computer skills. Through the classes in Computer Technology and the Computers/Information Management (CIM) program at Normandale, Cruz has used his previous knowledge and his experience in our programs to earn a promotion at his current job.

    Cruz is on track to finish the CIM and Computer Technology programs this spring, which he feels gives him a more well-rounded background. He is planning to continue his education and get his bachelor’s degree so he can continue advancing in his professional career.

    “The classes I have taken in the CIM and Computer Technology programs have really increased my knowledge in a lot of different areas,” Cruz says. “The CIM program has given me a broad knowledge of many different computer programs, which I feel will prepare me for a variety of situations. The Computer Technology program has helped prepare to work in IT.

    Overall, my experience in both programs at Normandale has been great. The classes are small and very specific, which has been a great learning environment for me. I am extremely thankful to have been a great situation to learn at Normandale.”

    Bio: "Stefanie Klein came into Normandale Community College’s HIT Program already having a passion for holistic medicine and complementary healthcare. Prior to going through the program, Klein had worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Minnesota but was unemployed when she started the HIT Track.

    With her background in information technology, along with her passion for health and alternative healing practices, she knew the HIT program would be a good fit to provide opportunities for a new career path. After completing the program, Klein took a job as an Implementation & Support Specialist with Mighty Oak Technology, a Minnesota based certified EHR vendor who specializes in speech recognition for the Chiropractic and specialty clinic industry, serving over 2,500 clients.

    Klein has been able to talk the healthcare language with chiropractors, understand what they are saying and translate Meaningful Use requirements for these clinics mostly because of the training within the program. What she really enjoyed was the fact that she was working with chiropractic and specialty clinics that match up with her philosophies of healthcare. Klein has also found satisfaction in the role medical records have played in helping patients.

    “I really liked the format of Normandale’s HIT Program,” said Klein. “The instructors were great, and were always around if we needed anything. The program played a big role in teaching important elements of the industry that I use in my current position. Overall I really enjoyed my experience at Normandale.”

    Bio: When Dozie Okpara arrived in the United States from Nigeria, he had already decided he wanted to study engineering. The hard part was making the decision where to start his college education. With his father’s help, Dozie chose Normandale because he would receive more personal attention from his instructors, and it provided an affordable, quality education. In fact, Dozie’s father decided to send his two sisters here as well.

    When Dozie first arrived at Normandale, he stayed quiet and observant as he adjusted to his new surroundings. However, that all changed when Dozie’s friend Bernard Akem convinced him to participate in a Student Senate meeting. This year, Dozie is president of the Student Senate.

    “Normandale has given me a quality education. The one-on-one peer tutoring and the accessibility of the teacher’s schedule for office hours make this a great place to learn. There are so many opportunities for participation in student groups and leadership. I am not sure if I would be on the path I am currently am on if I was not at Normandale.
